General Assembly 4: Special Political and Decolonization Committee

The General Assembly Fourth Committee, Special Political and Decolonization (SPECPOL), was created in 1945 to address a crucial issue of the day: colonialism. Although its agenda has slowly expanded to include other important political issues, the legacy of colonialism and questions of self-determination and self-governance of territories are still addressed by this committee. Today, SPECPOL serves as the United Nations’ Forum to discuss any concerns that member states express regarding either political stability or decolonization. The issues that come before the committee are almost always of contemporary importance as well as complex and engaging. This year, we will deal with three such topics to be announced in early August. I look forward to working with and meeting all of you at DUMUNC!

Hi everybody! My name is Brian Fitzpatrick and I’ll be your chair for the GA 4. I was born in Zurich, Switzerland and also had the pleasure of growing up and attending high school there. I suppose that’s what really got me interested in MUN. Beyond that, I’m also a huge sports fan, will watch just about anything you can classify as a sport, and root for every professional team out of Detroit (even, sadly, the pitiful Lions!). I also love to sing, with or without music/accompaniment/consent of those around me, and often find myself humming without even realizing it. But enough about me. I’m really looking forward to the chance to meet and work with all of you and hope to make DUMUNC XXVII the best one yet!
