The General Assembly First Committee, Disarmament and International
Security (DISEC), deals with just that: Ensuring international
security and managing the use of arms. Though the 1st Committee has
been in existence since the establishment of the United Nations, until
the early 1980s, the committee was the Political and Security
Committee (POLISEC) and changed as the world continued to develop
outstanding numbers of weapons. Today, topics covered in DISEC range
from the growth of nuclear weapons to landmines and global terrorism.
It is a particularly important committee because the topics it covers
are so diverse, and can impact countries directly on both a local and
national level. This year, the three topics that will be discussed at
DUMUNC are the peacetime stockpiling of nuclear weapons, the
acquisition of small arms by terrorists, and the question of depleted
uranium in weaponry.

Hi Everyone! My name is Brendan Saslow and I will be your co-chair for General
Assembly 1 this year. I hope you plan to prepare for committee, pull
your research on Outer Space Weaponry out of your 3-inch binders. I am
originally from Florida and I'm just getting used to Duke. If you have
any questions on what it's like I would be happy to answer them. I was
a member of Model UN all four years of high school, so if you have any
questions relating to committee, the topics, or rules of procedure be
sure to email me any time. Good Luck! |
