General Assembly 1: Disarmament and International Security Committee

The General Assembly First Committee, Disarmament and International Security (DISEC), deals with just that: Ensuring international security and managing the use of arms. Though the 1st Committee has been in existence since the establishment of the United Nations, until the early 1980s, the committee was the Political and Security Committee (POLISEC) and changed as the world continued to develop outstanding numbers of weapons. Today, topics covered in DISEC range from the growth of nuclear weapons to landmines and global terrorism. It is a particularly important committee because the topics it covers are so diverse, and can impact countries directly on both a local and national level. This year, the three topics that will be discussed at DUMUNC are the peacetime stockpiling of nuclear weapons, the acquisition of small arms by terrorists, and the question of depleted uranium in weaponry.
