Joint Crisis

The European Union

The European Union is a developing and fascinating system that has brought the people of Europe together since the end of the Second World War. It is clear to the rest of the world that the role the European Union plays on the international stage today is vital on many levels. Understanding European ideas, strategies, and values are crucial for the proper functioning of not only transatlantic relations, but also of international relations altogether. The European Union at DUMUNC 2008 will address 3 central topics of current interest in depth to attempt to find mutual solutions to certain key issues. In the real European Union, all voices are heard, no matter what language is uttered. At DUMUNC, we will commit the blasphemy of accepting only the English language. However, we hope to still hear your voice here in February.

My name is Etienne Coulon and I am a third-year student at Duke University. I am majoring in Political Science with a concentration in International Relations. In addition to that I am pursuing two minors in Economics and Environmental Sciences & Policy. I am a French citizen, but my family now lives in Simsbury, CT. I have had the privilege of living in France, England, Spain, the United States, and most recently Germany where I studied abroad in Berlin for the Spring and Summer semesters last year. I speak French, Spanish, and German in addition to English. Due to my experiences in all these places (mainly Europe), I have grown quite fond of studying the “old continent” and the European Union. I look forward to spending the upcoming conference working with all of you to assure a successful and fruitful committee experience. (The picture of me is from the Tatras Mountains on the border of Poland and Slovakia.)
